HOME BATTERY REWARDS PROGRAM GOALS
The Home Battery Rewards Program is one of the largest efforts in the United States to use solar energy and battery storage from homes to make the electric grid more renewable, resilient, and reliable. Your home will operate in concert with thousands of others to help balance all sources of renewable energy island-wide. Since your Battery System will benefit the entire Oahu electric grid, Hawaiian Electric will provide an UPFRONT Incentive, Ongoing Incentive credit, and Energy Export credit for participation on your electric bill in exchange for participating in the Home Battery Rewards Program.
Home Battery Rewards Program Q & A
Get paid to join a network of homes that generate, store, and return energy to the grid.
In addition to your one-time, upfront payment, you’ll receive monthly bill credits. The HBR program will have a special itemized
line on your bill. Your bill will be reduced by the amount of the incentive including all kWh charges and the monthly service charges.
If your incentive exceeds your minimum bill, you will receive a check annually from Hawaiian Electric for the remaining value of the incentive net of bill credits.

You must have a solar system, purchase a Tesla Powerwall Battery before August 2023, and be a Hawaiian Electric customer on O‘ahu.
You can opt-out of the program at any time, but if you unenroll before the end of the program in 2031, you must repay a prorated portion
of the UPFRONT incentives to Hawaiian Electric.
You’ll receive a monthly incentive on your Hawaiian Electric bill based on your number of batteries. That payment can take your utility bill down to $0, and if there’s incentive left over, Hawaiian Electric will send you a check annually for the additional amount you’re owed.
Your system will continue to work as it always has providing you power security.
Swell will intelligently manage your system for the duration of the program to maximize the value of your normal operations and Home Battery Rewards benefits each day. As a result, changes you make in the Tesla app won't change the way your system operates while in the program.
